How We Work Together: Evidence-Based Approach

Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all. Evidence-based approaches mean that extensive research has been conducted across various situations and populations to identify which types of treatment are most effective. But research is just the starting point. Dr. Steele tailors her approach to you as an individual, adapting treatment to fit your cultural background, personal values, and specific needs. Together, you'll decide what works best for you.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most researched and effective approaches for anxiety, depression, insomnia, and many other challenges. The foundation of CBT is understanding that your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected, and when you change one, the others shift too.

How CBT works:

  • Identifies thought patterns that keep you stuck
  • Examines how those thoughts affect your feelings and behaviors
  • Works on changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors
  • Creates natural shifts in how you feel

If you're constantly thinking "I'm not good enough," you'll likely feel discouraged and pull back from opportunities. If you're worried about getting into a car accident every time you drive, anxiety builds and avoidance follows. CBT helps you recognize these patterns and develop practical tools to interrupt them, leading to lasting change.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) builds on CBT with a specific focus on balancing acceptance and change. Originally developed for individuals with borderline personality disorder, DBT has proven effective for a much wider range of struggles. It's particularly helpful when you're experiencing emotional dysregulation, difficulty navigating interpersonal relationships, or struggles with stress management that leave you feeling overwhelmed and reactive.

DBT teaches practical skills across four areas:

  • Mindfulness - staying present and aware in the moment
  • Emotion Regulation - understanding and managing intense feelings
  • Distress Tolerance - getting through crisis moments without making things worse
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness - communicating your needs while maintaining healthy relationships

These aren't abstract concepts. They're tools you can use in daily life to handle difficult emotions, navigate conflict, and build the life you want.

Problem-Solving Therapy (PST)

Problem-Solving Therapy (PST) is another type of CBT that's ideal when life feels overwhelming, when you're facing stressor after stressor and aren't sure where to start. PST works by providing a collaborative space where you and Dr. Steele model how to solve problems together until you begin to understand and adapt these problem-solving skills, allowing you to move forward with increased confidence.

The Problem-Solving Therapy process:

  • Identify and define the real issue clearly
  • Brainstorm potential solutions
  • Evaluate your options and their likely outcomes
  • Create an action plan and put it into practice
  • Assess what's working and adjust as needed

Research shows that chronic complaining and negativity actually rewires your brain to spot more problems while missing solutions. Over time, this pattern can shrink the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for focus, decision-making, and emotional regulation.

Problem-Solving Therapy helps interrupt this cycle by training your brain toward solution-focused thinking, strengthening the very cognitive abilities that negativity weakens.

Session Options: In-Person, Virtual, Text & Email

In-Person Psychotherapy Session:

A 50-minute session conducted face-to-face at our Garden City (Long Island), NY office. This format provides a dedicated therapeutic space and allows for in-person connection and interaction. This is ideal for clients who prefer meeting in a private office setting and can travel for regular therapy appointments.

Video/Phone Psychotherapy Session:

Video session via Google Meet with option of meeting by phone instead (e.g., if internet connection becomes unstable). This option can be booked for all returning clients (i.e., previous session within less than 6 months) or those who have just completed the intake and decide to begin the treatment process.

Text Psychotherapy Session:

A full 50-minute session conducted via text message. This format offers flexibility for those in environments where speaking aloud isn’t ideal. Responses are provided within a few minutes and are capped at 10 minutes per reply. Text sessions can be especially helpful when attending events or managing challenging situations in real-time.

E-mail Psychotherapy Assistance:

This full-day support option is ideal for clients needing extended guidance across a longer timeframe. For example, someone with a history of difficult family conflict may find this service helpful while on a family vacation. Similar to text sessions, e-mail sessions provide encouragement and reinforcement of skills over an extended amount of time.

Text Psychotherapy Session:

Full 50-minute session via text message. Replies are slower than real-time meetings (i.e., video/phone sessions) but are faster than e-mail sessions. Text responses can be expected from your therapist within a few minutes and will take no more than 10 minutes. You may find a text session helpful if you are attending an event or in a situation in which you need guidance and/or reminders of skills already learned during previous sessions. For example, someone with social anxiety may find it helpful to text their therapist during a party to reinforce skills and provide encouragement real-time.

E-mail Psychotherapy Assistance:

This service may be ideal for those in an extended situation in which they may need more guidance over time. For example, someone with a history of difficult family conflict may find this service helpful while on a family vacation. Similar to text sessions, e-mail sessions provide encouragement and reinforcement of skills over an extended amount of time. Replies for this service can be expected within 1-2 hours (excluding holidays and overnights 10 PM-6 AM, unless otherwise discussed with your therapist). Price of session is for the full day.

Getting Started With Restored Living

Once you're ready to begin—or if we determine together that we're a good fit—we'll schedule your intake session. This is required for all new clients or those returning after 6 or more months away from therapy. During intake, Dr. Steele will gather a detailed history of what's bringing you in, lifestyle factors that may be contributing to current challenges, and how these issues are affecting your daily life.

Together, you'll identify initial treatment goals and create a flexible roadmap for your work together. This plan can shift and evolve as needed. Therapy is a collaborative process, and Dr. Steele will adjust the approach as you go, ensuring it continues to meet your needs.

FAQs

Whether you're considering therapy for the first time or returning after a break, it's normal to have questions. Here are answers to some of the most common inquiries people have when starting psychotherapy.

What is psychotherapy, and how does it work?
Psychotherapy (or “talk therapy”) is a collaborative process where you work with a trained mental health professional to explore thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Therapy can help you gain insight, develop coping strategies, and make meaningful changes.
Does therapy really work?
Yes, research consistently shows that psychotherapy is effective for a range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship problems. The key factors include your willingness to engage and the quality of the therapeutic relationship.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, psychiatrist, and therapist?
Psychologists (like me) have doctoral training and specialize in psychotherapy and psychological testing. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who typically focus on prescribing medication. Therapists is a general term for professionals who provide talk therapy—it can include social workers, mental health professionals, and counselors who typically have masters-level training.
What kind of therapy do you use?
I use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and/or Problem-Solving Therapy (PST) and more, depending on your needs and goals. We’ll decide together what works best for you.
What happens in a typical session?
We’ll likely follow-up with updates from the previous session, and continue to work toward your goals. Sometimes sessions are structured; other times they’re more open. You set the pace.
Can therapy help with anxiety, phobias, trauma, or relationship issues?
Yes. Therapy has been shown to be highly effective for all of these concerns. I specialize in supporting individuals facing challenges like these and more.
Can I stop therapy at any time?
Yes. You’re never locked into therapy—you can pause or stop at any point. Ideally, we’ll discuss your decision and plan a thoughtful ending together.
Will you judge me?
No. Therapy is a non-judgmental space where you’re safe to be honest and vulnerable. My role is to support and understand—not to criticize.
